Thomas W. Smith is the Chief Operating Officer for Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc., headquartered in Bay Shore, NY. Tommy plays a key role in contributing to the vision, strategy and overall direction of the company’s operations and business initiatives. Among his primary responsibilities is the efficient operation of school bus transportation for more than 50,000 children and 21 school districts, as well as public transportation for Suffolk County. He manages every facet of the company’s operations from the upkeep and optimal functioning of the buildings and grounds at the company’s 27 locations to the maintenance of more than1,600 vehicles. As a trusted part of the company’s leadership team, Tommy’s professional and personal goals reflect Suffolk Transportation’s focus on safety, excellence, and respect for every company employee and the highest level of support and service for every customer the company services.
Tommy is President of the New York School Bus Contractors Association (NYSBCA), the leading organization for school transportation providers in New York State. The primary mission of this industry-wide organization is to promote safe, reliable, and cost-effective student transportation. He is also a board member of the National School Transportation Association (NSTA). In addition, for more than five years, Tommy has been a board member of AHRC Suffolk, a not-for-profit organization that provides programs and services to children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities on Long Island.
Tommy has devoted his entire career to the transportation industry. Prior to joining Suffolk Transportation Service in 2010, he held positions in operations at United Bus Corp/Adelwerth Bus Corp. and Hampton Jitney, and he grew up working in his family’s business, Babylon-based John Bosch Bus Company/Inter-County Motor Coach, Inc.
Tommy holds a BBA in marketing and a minor in communications from Dowling College. He resides in eastern Long Island, NY.
