The safety of the children is our number one priority and they are all treated with the utmost dignity, respect, and care. For safety purposes, driver and driver assistants are required to wear a “waist up” uniform, including company ID as a school transportation identifier for parents, guardians and school personnel, as well as to look neat and professional.

Bus & Van Operations

Suffolk Transportation Service’s large bus and van fleet operates under the most rigorous requirements for safety, efficiency and cost savings. Our vehicles are continually being maintained and replaced based on a carefully planned schedule, not only to meet compliance standards, but to exceed them. As a result, we proudly hold one of the highest NYSDOT inspection pass rates on Long Island. Our school fleet is supported by dedicated transportation professionals utilizing advanced routing software yielding safe and efficient route sets for our districts. Each of our vehicles come with advanced safety measures including digital road supervision for example driver telematics, advanced child check, onboard digital camera systems and live G.P.S. tracking. Safety technology along with dedicated road supervisors throughout our transportation system supports our drivers and proactively evaluates on the road safety.

SHARED SERVICES

With a fleet of more than 1,600 school vehicles and a van network of 20 school districts within Suffolk County, Suffolk Transportation Service is able to provide an affordable shared-service approach for van routes and driver assistants so school districts in Suffolk County can retain more of their resources for educational purposes. Whenever possible, and always with district approval, children traveling to out-of-district special education and private schools can be transported with children from neighboring districts going to the same or nearby destination schools. This shared service model has been a very significant cost-saver for school districts participating in this initiative.

PRE-K

Traveling to and from pre-school or daycare can create anxiety and concern for younger children and their parents. Suffolk Transportation Service takes its responsibility for our youngest passengers very seriously, and we are committed to providing the safest and most reliable transportation for them. Skilled drivers and driver assistants are trained to be sensitive to each child’s individual needs and to implement the most up-to-date safety measures. You can feel confident that Suffolk Transportation Service will be a trusted partner for parents and caregivers, carefully protecting all of our youngest riders.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Understanding and meeting the needs of our most vulnerable children is critical to all of us at Suffolk Transportation Service. All our special needs drivers and driver assistants are provided additional special needs training by our expert staff. The training covers the annually required Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) program; PJ's Law, which deals with special needs training and strategies for helping to transport these students safely; and supplemental classes that deal with a variety of topics and challenges, as needed. In addition, Suffolk Transportation Service has created our “Travel Training” program, geared toward the high school-age special needs student who will be using mass transit upon leaving the school environment. Working with the local school districts and Suffolk County Transit, this program is designed to build the confidence, knowledge and safety-awareness that will help young riders transition to a productive life after high school.

We require a clean pre-employment drug test and ongoing random drug and alcohol testing

Drivers are fingerprinted, undergo criminal background checks and character references

Drives receive up to 60 hours of in-house classroom and road training

Drivers are subjected to internal, external and peer road reviews
